Text message scams, also known as SMS phishing or “smishing”, are becoming one of the most common ways fraudsters try to steal personal and financial information. These messages often appear to come from a trusted source, such as a bank, delivery service, or government agency, and are designed to create urgency so you act quickly without thinking.

Smishing messages may claim there is a problem with your account, a missed package delivery, or suspicious activity that requires you to click a link or verify information. These links often lead to fake websites designed to collect your personal details, login credentials, or banking information.

To protect yourself, remember a few key steps:
  • Do not click links or download attachments from unknown or suspicious text messages
  • Never share personal or financial information through text
  • Verify the message by contacting the company directly using a trusted phone number or website
  • Be cautious of messages that create urgency or pressure you to act immediately

Bank of Bozeman will never request sensitive information such as your online banking password or full account details via text message.

If you receive a suspicious message, delete it and contact the bank directly if you have any concerns. Staying alert and taking a moment to verify can help protect your personal and financial information!
